Safe & Drug Free Communities

The mission of the Safe & Drug Free Communities (SDFC) program is to provide resources to local communities to develop and implement drug and violence prevention programs aimed at reducing the risk factors and increasing the protective factors that encourage resiliency in youth.

Purpose:

Funds are to be used for developing and implementing comprehensive community-based programs aimed at preventing drug use and violence among youth.

Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education under the Title IV, Part A, Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities, No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Public Law 107-110.

Grant awards range from $10,000 to $50,000. Eligible applicants include public entities  and private non-profit corporations.

Allowable Activities:

  • Activities that complement and support local educational agency activities including developing and implementing activities to prevent and reduce violence associated with prejudice and intolerance.
  • Dissemination of information about drug and violence prevention.
  • Planning, organizing, developing and implementing community-wide drug and violence prevention programs.

CREATE

CREATE for a Drug-Free West Virginia is a multi-agency coordinating council formed in response to a federal legislative mandate and in recognition of the diverse problems caused by the illegal or unhealthy use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD).

The mission of CREATE for a Drug-Free West Virginia is to:

  • Promote the health and well-being of the citizens of West Virginia.

  • Eliminate the unhealthy or illicit use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs among youth and adults.
